This guide walks you through how to prepare, write, and publish a blog post in Shopify using its simple editor and integrated SEO tools.

Updated over 3 months ago

Shopify is best known for e-commerce, but its built-in blogging tool is a powerful way to share updates, publish educational content, and support your SEO strategy. Blog posts can help drive organic traffic to your product pages, strengthen internal linking, and keep customers engaged with your brand story.

Set Up Your Content Essentials

Because Shopify’s blog editor is more streamlined than other CMS platforms, having your content prepared ahead of time ensures that formatting and optimization go smoothly. The platform also emphasizes clean URLs and strong metadata, which directly support e-commerce SEO.

  • A clear title

  • Your full article content (with H2s/H3s for structure)

  • A featured image or header graphic

  • Any product links you want to include

  • Meta title, meta description, and a keyword-friendly slug

  • Tags or topics you plan to use

With these ready, you’re set to create your post inside Shopify.

Step 1: Add a Blog Post

Shopify supports multiple blogs (such as “News,” “Journal,” or “Updates”). Adding your post in the right location ensures it appears in the correct section of your site and inherits the right theme styling.

To create your post:

  1. Log in to your Shopify Admin.

  2. Go to Online Store → Blog Posts.

  3. Click Add Blog Post.

  4. Enter your post title and add your main content in the text editor.

Good to Know: Shopify’s editor is similar to a standard document editor, making it easy to paste or type your content directly.

Step 2: Optimize and Format

Formatting matters for readability and SEO, primarily if your blog supports your product catalog. Shopify’s toolbar allows you to style text and add visual elements without requiring custom code.

In the editor:

  • Format text using headings, lists, and spacing

  • Add images, videos, or embedded content

  • Insert internal links to products, collections, or related posts

  • Add tags to help organize content and improve on-site navigation

Add SEO details:

  1. Scroll to the Search Engine Listing Preview.

  2. Click Edit website SEO.

  3. Set your meta title, meta description, and URL slug.

Good to Know: Strong metadata improves how your post appears in Google search results and helps tie your article to your e-commerce keywords.

Step 3: Set Visibility and Publishing Options

Shopify gives you simple but effective publishing controls so you can coordinate content with product launches, campaigns, or announcements. Assigning the right blog channel also improves how your content appears on your storefront.

Choose your settings:

  • Select Visible to publish immediately

  • Or choose Set a specific publish date to schedule your post

  • Assign the post to a Blog (e.g., “News,” “Journal,” or a custom blog you’ve created)

These details determine where and when your audience will see your content.

Step 4: Publish Your Post

Before publishing, it’s important to review your formatting, spacing, and product links, especially if your post connects to your storefront’s shopping journey.

When ready:

  1. Click Save.

  2. Use View to preview the post on your live theme.

  3. If everything looks correct, hit Publish.

Your blog post will now appear on your chosen blog page and can be linked from product pages or featured sections across your store.

Best Practices for Shopify Publishing

  • Keep paragraphs short for better mobile readability

  • Use descriptive alt text for all images

  • Reuse tags and blog channels to stay organized

  • Include CTAs directing readers toward your storefront
