How to Publish in Squarespace

This guide walks you through preparing, formatting, and publishing your blog content in Squarespace so your posts look polished and professional on any template.

Updated over 3 months ago

Squarespace combines clean design with an intuitive editor, making it particularly popular among visually driven brands. Its block-based layout system allows you to publish beautifully formatted blog posts without needing to code, and its built-in SEO tools make optimization straightforward.

Your Pre-Publishing Checklist

Preparing your content before opening Squarespace helps ensure a smooth publishing experience. Because Squarespace emphasizes clean visual layouts, having your structure, visuals, and SEO elements ready will make your post easier to format once you’re inside the editor.

Make sure you have:

  • A strong post title

  • Clean, structured content with H2/H3 headings

  • A thumbnail image for your blog grid

  • Any images or videos you plan to embed

  • Tags and categories in mind

  • Your SEO title, meta description, and URL slug

  • Internal links to other pages or posts

Once your content is gathered, you’re ready to create your post.

Step 1: Add a New Blog Post

All blog posts in Squarespace live inside a Blog Page. Creating your post from this area ensures it's added to the right collection and displayed correctly across your site, whether that’s a blog grid, list layout, or featured section.

How to create a post:

  1. Log in to your Squarespace Dashboard.

  2. Navigate to Pages → Blog.

  3. Click + Add Post.

  4. Enter your title, then begin writing or paste your content into the editor.

Good to Know: Squarespace uses content blocks (text, image, video, spacer), giving you complete control over your layout as you build your article.

Step 2: Style and Organize Your Post

Squarespace’s visual editor makes it easy to design beautiful blog layouts. Thoughtful spacing, consistent headings, and strong visuals help your content look professional and aligned with your branding.

Build your layout:

  • Use Text, Image, Video, and Embed blocks

  • Add Spacer blocks to create balanced spacing

  • Group related content for cleaner visual flow

Organize your content:

  1. Open the Options tab for your post.

  2. Upload a thumbnail image (this appears in your blog feed).

  3. Add your tags and categories to improve organization and SEO.

  4. Add an excerpt if you want to control how your post is previewed on your blog's homepage.

Tip: These small details help your content fit seamlessly into your site’s overall design.

Step 3: Add SEO Details

Squarespace has built-in SEO tools that enable you to control how your content appears on search engines and social platforms. Adding optimized metadata ensures your content is discoverable and accurately represented.

Add SEO essentials:

  1. Scroll to the SEO panel.

  2. Edit your SEO title (can differ from your on-page title).

  3. Write a clear, compelling meta description.

  4. Adjust your URL slug to align with your main keyword or topic.

Tip: Keep your slug short and readable, such as “Squarespace-blogging-guide”.

Step 4: Publish Your Post

Squarespace saves content automatically, but you choose when it goes live. Reviewing your post visually helps ensure images, spacing, and blocks display correctly across devices.

To publish your post:

  • Click Save → Publish to go live immediately

  • Or use Schedule to set a future date and time

Once published, your post will appear on your site’s blog page according to your template’s layout settings.

Squarespace templates automatically optimize layout and typography, but reviewing your spacing and excerpt ensures everything looks intentional and brand-consistent.

Best Practices for Squarespace Publishing

  • Use consistent spacing between content blocks

  • Keep paragraphs short for better mobile readability

  • Add meaningful alt text to images

  • Use spacer blocks sparingly, just enough to balance your layout

  • Write a short, compelling excerpt to improve blog feed engagement

  • Reuse categories and tags to keep content organized
